European Conference on Information Systems ECIS 2027

Transportation

Luxembourg was the first country in the world to offer free nationwide public transportation. Whether you take a bus, train or tram – you can hop on or off without needing a ticket.

Getting to Luxembourg Sustainably

Luxembourg’s central location in Europe and excellent transport connections make it an ideal destination for lower-impact conference travel. For many participants, especially those travelling within neighbouring countries, rail offers a convenient and significantly lower-emission way to reach the city.

At the same time, we recognise that not all journeys can be made by train. For those travelling from further afield or from regions with limited rail connections, flying may be the most practical option. Luxembourg Airport (Findel) is well connected to major European hubs and provides straightforward access to the city via the many public transport options.

Leave the plane behind

Luxembourg is well-connected by high-speed and regional rail services, offering a comfortable and low-carbon alternative to flying:

  • Frankfurt: 4 hours
  • Brussels: 3 hours
  • Cologne: 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Paris: 2 hours 15 minutes
  • Strasbourg: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Metz: 50 minutes
  • Trier: 50 minutes

We encourage all participants travelling from within Europe to consider rail travel. Train journeys produce signficantly fewer emissions than flights, and deliver you directly to Luxembourg City Centre.

Free Public Transport in Luxembourg

In 2020, Luxembourg became the first country in the world to make all public transport completely free. All trains (except first class seats), buses, and trams throughout Luxembourg are free of charge for everyone – residents and visitors alike. This means:
  • No tickets required: simply board any bus, tram or train
  • Nationwide coverage: free travel extends to all corners of the country
  • Frequent service: regular departures throughout the day and evening
  • Integrated network: seamless connections between trains, trams, and buses.
